Obstetrics and Gynecology Home Page | More about the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program IntroductionThe Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a fully accredited four-year residency program accepting four residents annually. Successful completion of the program leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The program provides clinical rotations through Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Medical Center, Sentara CarePlex and Sentara Leigh Hospital. General DescriptionThe hospitals' inpatient and outpatient clinic services provide excellent experience in normal and high-risk obstetrics and in diagnostic and operative gynecology. The number and diversity of patients offers residents vast experiences. Staffing of services permits adequate time for teaching conference and rounds, reflection, and inquiry. The faculty is readily available for consultation to support residents' training in patient management and surgery. The department consists of the Divisions of General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Urogynecology. One fellowship position is available each year in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. The Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine at EVMS, part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, provides unparalleled opportunities for state-of-the-art patient care in infertility and reproductive medicine. Each post-graduate year trains directly under the supervision of faculty attendants. The residency education didactics program consists of weekly case conferences, grand rounds with visiting speakers, subspecialty conferences and core curriculum lectures based on the educational objectives defined by the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. A monthly journal club features an article from each of the divisions. CurriculumThe first-year resident rotates through ambulatory care clinics and inpatient internal medicine, maternal-fetal medicine and night float, benign gynecology, ultrasound/genetics and the continuity care clinics. Emphasis is placed on history and physical exam skills, normal obstetrics and benign gynecology. Residents learn and perform uncomplicated vaginal and Cesarean deliveries and gain experience with operative vaginal deliveries and minor gynecological surgery procedures. During the second year, residents rotate through gynecologic surgery, maternal-fetal medicine and night float, benign gynecology, gynecologic oncology and the continuity care clinics. During this year, the residents' level of participation in benign gynecology and oncology surgeries increases. Third-year rotations include more advanced gynecologic surgery and complicated obstetrics experience, continuity care clinics, training in urogynecology and reproductive endocrine and infertility. The fourth-year resident rotates through maternal-fetal medicine, benign gynecology, gynecology oncology and gynecology surgery. At this point, the resident assumes decision-making responsibility for his or her patients and greater teaching responsibility for fellow residents and medical students.
