Geriatric Clinical Research Center
Glennan Center faculty and staff are actively involved in
researching vaccines, osteoporosis, Alzheimers disease, infectious diseases, and
endocrinology. Community volunteers of all ages are often needed to assist with the
studies. Please contact the Geriatric Clinical Research Center at 446-7340 to learn

Active Research Studies
| Study:
Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Phase II Trial of
the Safety, Tolerability and Immunogenicity of Lyophilized
Chimerivax™-Wn02 West Nile Vaccine In Healthy Adults
Objectives: This study is
designed to assess safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of
three dose levels of lyophilized ChimeriVax™-WN02 compared to
placebo in healthy adults aged 18 to 40, then assess a single
dose level against placebo in older healthy adults (≥ 41 years).
Recruitment: Open to
enrollment subjects 65 year and older. |
| Study: A Preoperative
and Post Operative Driving Study Concerning Patients with Total
Knee and Hip Replacements: Postoperative Variation in
Neurocognitive Status
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine the
optimal post operative recovery time after a total hip or knee
replacement surgery to resume driving.
Recruitment: Open to
enrollment subjects. |
| Study:
Response to Influenza: Aging and Vaccine Efficacy
Objectives: To examine the
safety and immunogenicity of a vaccination strategies to enhance
the Th1 response by booster at the peak of IS-Th1 expansion
following first vaccination. The frequency of IS-Th1 and the
antibody level on days 7 and 28 will be used as the two main
indicators of immunogenicity, although CD8+ T cell response will
also be analyzed. The safety profile to be assessed includes
immediate adverse events, solicited local and systemic events,
and unsolicited adverse events.
Recruitment: Enrollment
on hold. |
| Study: A Phase IV
Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Safety and Tolerability of
Zostavax™ in Subjects >/=60 Years of Age
Objectives: The purpose of
the study is to accumulate additional safety data on the
administration of ZOSTAVAX ™ in subjects 60 years and older. The
study will evaluate the general safety of ZOSTAVAX™ in subjects
60 years of age and older by evaluating the relative risk of
developing serious clinical adverse experiences for 42 days and
6 months post-vaccination in subjects who receive the vaccine
and those who receive placebo.
Recruitment: Enrollment
open. |
| Study:
Transfusion Therapy Trial for Functional Outcomes in
Cardiovascular Patients Undergoing Surgical Hip Fracture Repair
(FOCUS) Objectives:
The purpose of the study is to compare the effect of
symptomatic transfusion to 10g/dL threshold transfusion on:
Ability to walk 10 feet (or across a room) without human
assistance 60 days after study entry; unstable angina,
myocardial infarction in-hospital or death within 30 days; other
outcomes including mortality, morbidity, and functional
recovery.
Recruitment: Enrollment
open to subjects at Norfolk General and DePaul Hospital for
people over the age of 50. |
