The need to care for a growing elderly population challenges future physicians to acquire basic skills, knowledge and perspectives to provide quality geriatric care. When today's health professions students reach the prime of their careers, they may find themselves devoting 75 percent of their time to the geriatric population.

Mission

To provide for Eastern Virginia Medical School, the Tidewater community and the Commonwealth of Virginia a Center of Excellence focused upon:

  • Research in aging and age associated diseases;
  • education of health care providers and community members regarding these same issues of aging and age-related diseases; and
  • thoughtful and compassionate care for older people.

Dr. Newman talking with a patient in the DePaul Primary Care ClinicThe Glennan Center focuses on the preventive, interventional, and research aspects of age-related diseases. By applying the findings from aging research to intervene in chronic disabilities of aging, The Glennan Center will help older patients maintain the highest possible degree of function and independence and avoid unnecessary and costly institutionalization.
