Continuing Medical Education Fellowship

The fellowship program in geriatric medicine is organized to provide a well-supervised experience at a sufficient level for the resident to acquire the competence of a physician with added qualifications in the field. It is at least 12 months in duration to meet requirements to sit for the examination conferring a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine. An optional additional one to three years can be elected for an academic fellowship. The academic fellowship is encouraged for those individuals who wish to remain in an academic setting, conduct research or teach geriatric medicine.

Resident Opportunities

Faculty support residency training for various departments within Eastern Virginia Medical School including Internal Medicine, Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Complex  clinical cases and lectures on geriatric evaluation, frailty, sensory impairment, dementia, non-pharmacologic management of behavioral disorder, incontinence, osteoporosis and ethical issues assist other departments to fulfill geriatric course requirement.

  • Residents rotate through a variety of clinical settings supervised by geriatricians. Clinical sites include geriatric inpatient service in the hospital, rehabilitation or long-term care facilities, and consultation clinics (Memory Assessment).
  • Faculty and staff will assist residents with laboratory research of clinical research projects, mentoring in the following areas:
    • Hypothesis design and development
    • Project design and development
    • IRB application and approval
    • Data collection and analysis
    • Publication

Community Education

Programs to educate the community regarding aging and age-associated challenges, problems, and diseases have been given to area support groups, Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (area agency on aging), Alzheimer's Association of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Mayor's Commission on Aging/Long Term Care Coordination, Hampton Roads Caregivers Coalition, hospice agencies, nursing and mental health associations, service organization, local chapters of AARP and senior citizens clubs and centers throughout Tidewater.
