Exit Loan Counseling

Every student who borrows federal loan funds must participate in an exit loan counseling. Group exit counseling sessions will be held towards graduation for MD and PA students. All other programs must schedule individual exit counseling appointments with the Director of the Office of Financial Aid. Also, any student who withdraws or goes on a leave of absence must schedule an individual exit counseling appointment.

Every student who borrows institutional loan funds must participate in an exit loan counseling session with the Student Loan Officer before graduating or withdrawing from EVMS. During this session, the borrower confirms the total amount borrowed, the source of each loan, repayment options (deferment, cancellation), the amount and date when repayment begins on each loan, and the length of the repayment period. Exit counseling sessions are conducted by the Student Loan Officer located in Smith-Rogers Hall.

Loan Deferment

While in attendance at EVMS, the student is responsible for obtaining deferments for student loans received prior to matriculation at EVMS. Loan deferment forms should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar (Lewis Hall, Room 1147) for completion.

After graduation or withdrawal from EVMS, the student should be aware that there are a variety of deferment options available for student loans received both before and after matriculation at EVMS. Some of the deferments available are for full-time student status, participation in an accredited residency program, and active duty military service. The length of the deferments vary depending upon the loan program. Each student should contact his or her servicer for available deferment options.

Student borrowers can track their federal loans and servicer contact information via the National Student Loan Data System (www.nslds.ed.gov) using their FAFSA PIN to log into that system.  Additional repayment information is available at StudentLoans.gov (https://studentloans.gov).
