Portsmouth Family Medicine Residency Program

Maryview Medical CenterMaryview Medical Center

This hospital, currently the only civilian hospital in operation in the city of Portsmouth, serves as the main site of inpatient teaching for Portsmouth Family Medicine residents. Our residents serve as the house staff here.

Maryview is a 346-bed community hospital that offers a variety of technologically advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services that provide for the medical needs of the community. Services include:

  • Behavioral Medicine Center –
    54-bed in-patient facility
  • Cancer Treatment Center
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Dedicated medical, surgical and cardiac ICUs
  • Diagnostic Breast Center
  • Family Birth Center
  • Rehabilitation Center
  • Spine Center

In addition to our central position at Maryview, the residency utilizes other area health care facilities. Maryview's nearby satellite facility, Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View, serves as an additional site for outpatient surgery experiences.

Children's Hospital of The King's DaughtersChildren's Hospital of The King's Daughters

A 144-bed pediatric hospital offering a wide range of specialized pediatric care, CHKD is located in the Eastern Virginia Medical Center. It is a freestanding tertiary-care pediatric referral center that also includes a large ambulatory care center. Family practice residents receive inpatient pediatrics and pediatric ED training at CHKD alongside pediatric residents. A number of pediatric electives are available to family medicine residents.
