Portsmouth Family Medicine Residency Program

"Masters" of the EMR

Life as a Third Year

By this time, you're spending four to five half days a week at the family practice center and finding more emphasis placed on learning the business aspects of medical practice. You'll even get an opportunity to attend an intensive week-long practice management course.

Some of your mandatory rotations are Neurology, ENT, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology/Urology, all done under the supervision of that strong base of committed community physicians. You'll also have one month of in-patient Family Medicine as the senior resident.

Lubna Rana, M.D., PGY-3, left, discusses a patient with Margaret Baumgarten, M.D.

You also have your choice of elective months that can include:

  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nephrology
  • Obstetrics
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Rheumatology

Community involvement opportunities continue to expand, with emphasis on administrative opportunities being pursued. There is also lots of flexibility to create your own electives. Anything you can think of to do, you can do it here - almost!
