Sailing Out of
Portsmouth |
Life After Hours
The bumper stickers say Virginia is for Lovers,
and that's especially true if you're a sun or sea lover. Probably best known for the
Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and Shenandoah Mountains, our area is rich with outdoor
and recreational opportunities. You'll discover white sand beaches that go for miles, a
sailing season that lasts most of the year, and mountains to hike, climb, and ski. In
fact, we're so close to the Outer Banks of North Carolina (just over an hour) that we even
include that in our backyard.
Hampton Roads, aptly named for the old nautical term that
denotes a port and major meeting of waterways, is made up of seven cities. Our residents,
faculty and staff live in all seven cities, each with its own unique personality - from
rural Suffolk, and sun and fun Virginia Beach to sprawling Chesapeake, commercial,
cultural Norfolk and historic Portsmouth. The diversity of the area is also apparent in
the many sports, cultural, and educational opportunities.

Olde Towne
Portsmouth |
Home Sweet Home
Many of us choose to call Portsmouth home. In this
historic, maritime community, we particularly like to boast about our Olde Towne district,
the second largest collection of antique houses on the East Coast, dating back to 1752,
featuring brick sidewalks and distinctive storefronts.
Right next door to Olde Towne is
our downtown with antique stores on every block, art galleries, and six museums (including
an amazing Children's Museum!), all within walking distance. There are also restaurants
ranging from quiet cafes and coffee shops to upscale eateries on the waterfront. And if
you come with a boat in tow, you can berth it at one of Portsmouth's seven deep-water
marinas.
Regional
Whether with your own family or out-of-town guests,
you'll enjoy the historic sites of Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown, or the amusement
parks (Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Water Country USA), all just a hop-skip-and-a-jump
down the road (1-2 hours away). In the resort area of Virginia Beach,
you can swim, snorkel, surf and enjoy frequent oceanfront festivals and
outdoor art shows. And if you've got more than a day, you can choose
between an urban adventure - Washington D.C. - or a rural retreat - the Shenandoah
Mountains, with their scenic Skyline Drive, Appalachian Trail, snow
skiing and caves. Both
are less than four hours away. Just a few more reasons that Virginia is for lovers of fun!
