Portsmouth Family Medicine Residency Program

High Tech/High Touch

All residents are assigned Palm handheld computers. These are just some of the ways we use ours:

Top 10 Ways We Practice High Tech Medicine

beam information to each other
look up drug information
find out where we're supposed to be and when (calendar)
make our "to-do" lists
get e-mail
get daily news
download articles
look up formulas (MedMath)
get access to latest in Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)
play games

Although High Tech is important, we still realize the importance of the art of medicine.

Top 10 Ways We Practice High Touch Medicine:

Janet (Green Team nurse) gives great massages
Dr. Bikowski sings songs to his patients
PFM "adopts" needy patients during the holidays
Ginger (Schedule Coordinator) gives the best hugs
Dr. Brittman has perfected the art of listening to his patients
Dr. Donnelly has the best "kids" stories
Mari-An (Purple Team nurse) knows just about everyone in
P-town (Portsmouth) by name
Dr. Bikowski loves to read stories to the children
Residents, faculty, nurses and staff make regular home visits
Several faculty and residents have been recognized by the hospital's Pastoral Care Department for practicing medicine that incorporates body, mind and spirit.
