Family-Centered Obstetrics

Performing an ultrasound on a pregnant patientThe Department of Community and Family Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School has a very strong Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology that is under the joint supervision of board-certified obstetrician/ gynecologists and board- certified family physicians who are dedicated to ensuring an environment that is conducive to the acquisition of proficiency in office gynecology, colposcopy, prenatal care, sonography, management of labor, vaginal delivery and postpartum care.

Rotation in the Division of Family Obstetrics and Gynecology is structured to provide AAFP-recommended proficiency in prenatal counseling, antenatal care, management of labor, vaginal Preparing to examine a pregnant patientdelivery, postpartum care and circumcision of newborn males. The use of ultrasound to determine BPD, HC, AC, FL, AFI, CRL, gestational age, and estimated birth weight, including the interpretation of electronic fetal monitor tracing and cord blood interpretation, are routine during rotation in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Gynecologic consults in the very busy Emergency Department and on the medical floors provide ample opportunity for uncommon experience in gynecologic care.

Ample opportunity also exists for exposure and/or participation (for those who desire) in surgical procedures such as laparoscopy, hysterectomy, Caesarean sections and laser surgery.
