Ghent Family Medicine Residency Program

Training Sites

Ghent Family Medicine uses tertiary as well as community hospitals to implement its curriculum.

Rotations through the various area hospitals are based on meeting specific educational objectives.

Sentara Norfolk General HospitalSentara Norfolk General Hospital

The principal EVMS teaching hospital for family medicine and other specialty training programs. Located near Fairfax Hall in Eastern Virginia Medical Center, it has 800 beds and is the largest community-owned, non-profit hospital in Virginia. It offers a variety of medical services including open-heart surgery, renal transplant, burn/trauma care, microvascular surgery, an in vitro fertilization program and a center for eating disorders. There are dedicated floors for primary care specialties such as Family Medicine and internal medicine. Here, family medicine residents learn skills required in a hospital setting to manage acute and critically ill patients and develop an appreciation for the relationship between primary-care physicians and consultants.

Children's Hospital of The King's DaughtersChildren's Hospital of The King's Daughters

A 144-bed pediatric hospital offering a wide range of specialized pediatric care. Located in the medical center, CHKD is a pediatric referral center that also includes a large ambulatory care center. Family Medicine residents receive inpatient training at CHKD alongside pediatric residents. A number of pediatric electives are available to family medicine residents.

Sentara Leigh HospitalSentara Leigh Hospital

A community-based hospital serving Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Here, Family Medicine residents gain experience in unopposed gastroenterology and emergency medicine.
