Ghent Family Medicine Residency Program

The Curriculum - Descriptions of PGY3 Rotations

Family Medicine/Internal Medicine (Ghent FP Inpatient Service)

During the third year, residents serve as seniors in the two-month inpatient family medicine service at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH), becoming more active in teaching of students and junior residents. Calls during these two months are seven per month and often with an intern.

Ghent Office Month

You will be seeing outpatients at the Ghent Family Medicine Center each day for four weeks. You will be expected to conduct a noon conference on an outpatient topic of your choice. During this month, you will rotate through minor surgery, treadmill stress testing, colposcopy and Coumadin clinic, and work a few mornings at SNGH's Ambulatory Care Center's Primary Care Clinic for indigent patients. Residents will also carry their own geriatric patients at our assisted living facility to keep up with their geriatrics skills. As in the PGY1 year, there is no call for senior residents on this rotation.

ENT/Ophthalmology

This rotation is with community faculty in their private offices with one-to-one supervision. Ophthalmology is one full day per week with Steven Snyder, M.D., of Mid-Atlantic Eyecare. ENT is one and a half days per week with Jeffrey Powell, M.D., D.D.S., of Eastern Virginia Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists. The focus is ambulatory and you will learn skills, diagnostic and procedural, that will be applicable in our practice at the family medicine center.

Gastroenterology

This is a one-month rotation at Sentara Leigh Hospital with direct one-on-one interaction with the community faculty of Digestive and Liver Disease Specialists. Residents round on the patients with common GI problems. Endoscopic procedures are also part of the experience.

Orthopedics

The orthopedic rotation at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and Orthopedics/Sports Medicine with Orthopedic Associates of Virginia are great hands-on experience months. Residents are involved in evaluating and treating young athletes as well as older adults. This is a great opportunity to maximize your skills on common orthopedics procedures.

Gynecology

The GYN month consists of experiences at three sites. Monday afternoons are for GYN Urology with community faculty from the Devine Tidewater Urology group. Two half-days are with community faculty member Claire Carman, M.D., of Breast Care Specialists — Wednesday mornings are general office visits and Friday mornings are for GYN procedures. Tuesday and Friday afternoons are for GYN clinics supervised by attendings from EVMS' Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Electives

Four months of elective rotations provide opportunities to focus on your areas of particular interests. Residents usually use these months doing pediatrics, obstetrics, radiology, urgent care, endocrinology, nephrology, dermatology and so on. Residents are allowed to have an away elective for a month after department approval.

Board Preparation

Throughout the residency, there are core-content board review sessions as part of the Wednesday Didactics. In addition, third-year residents will attend a review course in June that is sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at EVMS. The course to be held in June 2007 will be our 23rd annual event and a number of Ghent faculty will be presenting. In past years, selected residents have given presentations at this course.
