Participation on State and National Committees

  • Jesus L. Lizarzaburu, M.D. – Class of 2001 – The National Conference of Special Constituencies (NCSC) of the American Academy of Family Physicians
  • Risa Filbey, M.D. – PGY2 - selected as the EVMS Family Medicine resident delegate to the Board of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (VAFP). She participated in the VAFP Summer Scientific Sessions in the summer of 2005 in Virginia Beach and the Winter Scientific Sessions in February of 2006 at Wintergreen. This position is supported by the VAFP.
  • Feroz Tamana, M.D. – PGY-2 - selected in June 2006 as the EVMS Family Medicine resident delegate to the Board of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (VAFP). His term will be from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. This position is supported by the VAFP.

Board Certification

Graduates of Ghent Family Medicine Residency and the Combined Family Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency (FM/IM), Class of 2005, all reported successful certification in ABFP. There were thirty-one new graduates from 2001-2005 who took the American Board of Family Practice exam and had a 100 percent pass rate. The graduates achieved an average score higher than the national average score by a range of 16 points (in 2003) to 95 points (in 2002).

Presentations and Scholarly Activities

  • Dr. Chris Dowd – Combined FM/IM resident – placed first in the clinical vignette competition at the Virginia ACP Meeting. He presented at the National ACP meeting in San Francisco in April 2005
  • Dr. Anke Hacker – Combined FM/IM resident – was selected to present her abstract at the Virginia ACP meeting in Roanoke, October 2005
  • Dr. Miyoko Takizawa – Ghent Family Practice resident -  presented on October 14–15, 2005, Orlando, Florida
  • Dr. Sahira Humadi (faculty) - Presented at the 21st Annual EVMS Family Medicine Review Course, June 21, 2005: “Irritable Bowel Syndrome”
  • Dr. Christine Matson (faculty) - Presented at the 21st Annual EVMS Family Medicine Review Course, June 22, 2005: “Immunization Update”
  • Dr. Dan Bluestein (faculty) – AGS
  • Dr. Amy Price (faculty) - Presented at the 21st Annual EVMS Family Medicine Review Course, June 23, 2005: “Managing New Medication in Psychiatry and Neurology”
  • Agatha Parks-Savage, EdD, LPC, RN (faculty) - Workshop at the 21st Annual EVMS Family Medicine Review Course, June 21, 2005: “Personality Pathology of the Suicidal Patient: Interventions for the Primary Care Physician”

In addition to the above presentations, the faculty of Ghent provides presentations to EVMS medical students, PA students and nurse practitioners.

  • Dr. Venu Bellum (FM PGY-3) – Case Report – submitted to Patient Care
  • Dr. Ashkan Javaheri (FM PGY-3) - Quality of Life – Treatment Modalities of Prostate Cancer. VAH patient population. Assessment of physician knowledge on asymptomatic bacteria in institutional patients.
