Application Process for the Year
2007 Match
Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
Ghent Family Medicine seeks candidates
with a strong academic background and a demonstrated interest in primary
care medicine. Our residency accepts applications via ERAS, the
Electronic Residency Application Service of the Association of American Medical Colleges,
available at http://www.aamc.org/eras/ or
202-828-0413.
Your ERAS application should include:
- curriculum vitae
- personal statement
- medical school transcript
- medical school deans letter
- at least 3 letters of recommendation,
which should include letters from supervisors of U.S. clinical experience(s)
- wallet-size photograph
- electronic transmission of USMLE transcripts
Applicants with previous residency
training must also submit:
- letter of recommendation from previous residency director(s)
- in-training exam scores
- schedule of rotations completed at
previous residency
Foreign Medical Graduates
We do accept foreign graduates. To be
competitive, an applicant should have a CV that shows real interest
in family practice or primary care medicine. U.S. experience should
include family practice experience, or at least a combination of
U.S. experiences that together define family practice (such as
several months each of internal medicine, pediatrics, and OB/GYN).
Letters of reference must address the applicant's suitability for
family practice training, including motivation, interpersonal
skills, clinical skills and medical knowledge.
We do not have specific cut-off scores
for USMLE exams, but we like to see that an applicant has passed in
the first or second attempt. We do not have a rule about when an
applicant graduated from medical school, but we do require that he
or she remain clinically active since graduating. We do sponsor J-1
visas, but not H-1 visas. Due to the large volume, we are only able
to review complete applications through ERAS. Due to the large
number of medical students who rotate through our program, we do not
offer externships at this time.
Additional requirements for foreign
medical graduates:
- valid and current ECFMG certificate (foreign medical
graduates only)
- at least one year of hands-on
clinical experience in the United States, preferably with experience
in inpatient and outpatient settings, and in either a family
practice specialty, or a combination of experiences in adult
medicine, pediatric medicine and obstetrics
- at least one letter of reference
which reflects your U.S. primary care clinical experience,
preferably from a family practitioner
- excellent spoken and written
English
Credit for Previous Residency Experience
Applicants who wish to seek credit for
previous residency training are reminded that the American Board of
Family Practice allows up to 12 months of credit for previous
postgraduate experience. Credit for previous residency rotations may be
given if the previous experience corresponds with rotations in the Ghent
Family Practice Residency curriculum.
Important: If you are seeking
credit for previous experience, please include a paragraph in your
personal statement indicating that you want credit, and delineating the
rotations you want credit for. The American Board of Family Practice
must approve any credit request prior to the start of residency
training.
