New book prepares physicians for widespread use of ultrasound |
Since the Civil War, the stethoscope has been a standard tool of the trade for physicians. Soon, the average doctor may be toting another valuable diagnostic tool: a pocket-size ultrasound machine.
Alexander B. Levitov, MD, a professor of internal medicine, believes that day is close. "I think in three to five years they will become commonplace," he predicts.
Dr. Levitov, a critical care physician and expert in the use of ultrasound, is prepared for that eventuality. He is author of a new book that guides physicians in use of the ultrasound machine. Bedside Ultrasound in Clinical Medicine was published in partnership with the American College of Physicians.

Health insurance premiums to increase |
A message from Matt Schenk, Director of Human Resources:
For FY 2011, health insurance premiums will increase significantly. As in the past several years, EVMS will absorb the majority of this increase; however, employee premiums will also increase.
To ensure that we continue to provide you the best health insurance options, and working with our benefit broker Mercer, next year's plans will include some significant changes. Some plan coverages have been modified slightly and premiums for the various plans and tiers within plans (single, family, etc.) have been adjusted to account for the risk and benefits within each plan.
While some increases will be greater than others, please remember that you have options (i.e. HMO vs. PPO) that could reduce your monthly premiums. We encourage you to be on the lookout for details on the upcoming open enrollment (May 10 - 21) and to be thoughtful in your selection of health insurance plan options.
Please contact Aimee Bader, Benefits Specialist, in Human Resources (446-6043) if you have any questions about your health insurance coverage or open enrollment. |

Tips for Earth Day from EVMS Materials Management |
April 22 is Earth Day a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. The EVMS Department of Materials Managament is taking the opportunity to remind everyone on campus to "reduce, reuse and recycle" whenever possible and buy products with post-consumer recycling content. Post-consumer material is an end product that has completed its life cycle as a consumer item and would otherwise have been disposed of as a solid waste. Many products have become environmentally friendly or are now made from 100 percent recycled material. Since the start of the campus-wide office recycling program in October 2008, EVMS has collected more than 104 tons or 208,500 lbs of recyclable materials. A ton of recycled paper saves the equivalent of 4,100 kWh of energy, 7,000 gallons of water, 60 pounds of air emissions and three cubic yards of landfill space.
