Document Delivery

For EVMS faculty, staff, students and Loansome Doc participants, the ILLiad Document Delivery Service provides:

  • Articles from journals in the EVMS library collection in the following formats:
    • Photocopies for pick up at the library or by mail.
    • Electronic scans of originals delivered to the requestor’s desktop.
  • Cost for items from the EVMS Library is $0.15 per page.

  • Articles from the EVMS Library collection are typically delivered on the same working day.

  • A large number of requests for a single individual may be processed five (5) items at a time to ensure fair access to this service.

Books, articles, and other materials not available in our library. These items are obtained from other libraries as interlibrary loans (ILL).

  • Costs for interlibrary loan documents are set by the institution providing the material and vary.

  •  Requests from Virginia academic libraries are delivered at no charge through consortium agreement.

  • Requests filled by libraries outside Virginia generally cost $9-$15.

  • The requestor can specify a cost limit; the default maximum cost is set at $15.

  • Interlibrary loan retrieval is typically 2-3 days, but can take longer.

The conditions of this service are set by the Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association, by the regulations of individual lending libraries, and by Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code). For details see Copyright Considerations.

Procedure for Using ILLiad Document Delivery Service

  • Register for EVMS Library services. Applications are also available in the library.
  • Register for EVMS Library ILLiad, entering your delivery preferences and billing account information.
  • Submit requests electronically while logged into your ILLiad account. Enter as much citation information as possible. Incomplete information can slow down or prevent the processing of the request.
  • Rush delivery should only be used for articles required for immediate patient care. Call the library at (757) 446-5845 if you need rush delivery.
  • You will be notified when the item arrives by email, phone, or mail, as you choose. Email will announce the item's availability for online retrieval with a link to ILLiad.
  • Materials on loan, such as books and audiovisuals, should be picked up at the Library Circulation Desk upon notification of their arrival.
  • Return borrowed items to the Library Circulation Desk immediately upon completion of their use. They must be returned no later than the posted due date.

Bills for this service will be sent monthly. For more information see Billing.

For further information about this service, contact the Interlibrary Loan Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, by phone at (757) 446-5845, email ILLiad@evms.edu, or see the ILLiad Frequently Asked Questions.

Copyright Considerations

Submitting an article request implies that the requestor is aware of the notice concerning copyright restrictions stated on each request form and is in full compliance:

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, USC) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. The photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept an article request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.

This law means the library cannot deliver

  • Documents in excess of fifty (50) pages.
  • The entirety of a copyrighted work copied without the express written permission of the copyright holder. It is the responsibility of the requester to secure written approval.
  • Multiple copies of an article.
  • More than one (1) article from a single periodical issue or one (1) chapter from a book for a single requestor.

For more information on copyright considerations, contact Kerrie Shaw, (757) 446-5842, shawks@evms.edu.
