Jerry Nadler, MD, FAHA, FACP Mansbach Professor of Medicine, Chair of Internal Medicine and Director of the Strelitz Diabetes Center
Dr. Nadler has been a member of a Special Advisory Committee on Type I Diabetes with the Director of the National Institutes of Health Diabetes Institute. Dr. Nadler was also the Associate Director of the NIH funded Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center at the University of Virginia.
Dr. Nadler has research funding from the NIH, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation and the Iacocca Foundation. Dr. Nadler is a standing member of the ADA and NIH grant review committees.
His primary interest is the role of lipid and immune inflammatory pathways leading to beta cell damage and the complications of Diabetes.

Aaron Vinik, MD, PhD, FCP, MACP Professor of Medicine/Pathology/Neurobiology, Director of Research and Neuroendocrine Unit

Dr. Vinik is regarded as a national leader in the field of diabetic neuropathy. His advances in the understanding of neuropathy have resulted in patient referrals from all parts of the United States and many other countries. He is also renowned for his academic and clinical expertise to the field of neuroendocrine tumors, resulting in referrals from other cities in USA. He has been listed amongst the best physicians in USA for the past nine years and is a featured speaker on diabetic neuropathy in the television series, D-Life, which presents education programs on diabetes to the public.
After bringing international recognition to Virginia as a result of his research and discovery of a gene, INGAP, which could prove to be a cure for diabetes, Dr. Vinik received the award for the Virginia Outstanding Scientist by the Science Museum of VA, in 2002 and the Southern Medical Association’s Seale Harris Award in 2003. He received the Dean's Award for Outstanding Research in 1993 and the Dean's Award for Outstanding Faculty in 1999. He was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha in 2004 by students of EVMS. In 2005, he was elected to Mastership of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Vinik has received research funding for his studies from the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Kroc Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, HUD, DHHS, NASA, The Diabetes Institutes Foundation, and pharmaceutical industries.
Dr. Vinik served as a member of the National Institute of Health General Clinical Research Center Study Section and the NIH Data Management committee. He was also Chairman of the American Diabetes Association task force on Nutrition, which established the guidelines for nutritional management of diabetes, and Chairman of the subcommittee for development of guidelines for neuropathy testing; in addition, he was a member of the committee to develop guidelines for managing lipid disorders in diabetes. He has served as Chairperson of the American Diabetes Association Grant Review Committee and as Director of the National Post-Graduate Education Course.
Dr. Vinik is Editor of “Endocrine Reviews” and Associate Editor of “Diabetes Care;” He is also an editor of several books, including “Neuroendocrine Tumors” from Interscience Institute; editor of the section on Neuroendocrine Tumors in De Groot’s textbook of Endocrinology; of the section on Neuroendocrine Tumors in the textbook, Cancer Medicine, and co-editor of the textbook, “Controversies in Treating Diabetes.” Dr. Vinik has authored six books, 109 book chapters, and has published more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Joseph Aloi, MD Associate Professor of Medicine, Clinical Director Strelitz Diabetes Center
Dr. Aloi graduated from the George Washington School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency and an endocrine, diabetes and metabolism fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has clinical expertise in diabetes, endocrinology and cardiovascular disease. His interests include the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes, management of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Aloi has served as principal investigator on the NAVIGATOR diabetes prevention clinical trial and is involved in ongoing clinical trials in cardiovascular risk reduction and new therapies for type 2 Diabetes. He is on the Board of Directors of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Romesh Khardori, MB, MD/PhD, FACP Professor, Director Endocrinology Metabolism Fellowship Program
Dr. Romesh Khardori graduated medical school from Jammu Kashmir University, India. He obtained his doctoral degree in Medicine/Endocrinology from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India in 1977. Dr. Khardori completed his Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon and the Joslin Diabetes Center/NEDH – Beth Israel Hospital (Harvard Medical School), Boston, MA. He completed advanced training in Neuro-endocrinology at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. Dr. Khardori is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Khardori served as Professor and Chief with the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine before joining EVMS in 2011. Dr. Khardori is now the Program Director for the EVMS Endocrinology Metabolism Fellowship Program. Dr. Khardori also serves on the editorial board of several professional journals and is the content managing editor for E-medicine. His clinical interests include Diabetes, pituitary and growth/developmental disorders and disease of the thyroid and adrenals. His research interests include biology of pituitary function and dysfunction. Dr. Khardori’s special interests focus on Neuroendocrinology of pituitary and growth/developmental disorder. John O’Brian, MD, FACP, FACE Professor of Medicine
Dr. O’Brian joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center at EVMS in 1990 having previously been affiliated with the prestigious Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he served as staff endocrinologist, head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program. Dr. O’Brian has also served as the advisor to the Surgeon General of the Navy in the areas of endocrinology and clinical research. His areas of clinical interest include management of type 1 diabetes, insulin pump therapy, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, and thyroid disease.

Cheryl Almirante, MD, FACE Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Almirante completed her fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism in 1998 at Montefiore Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She has co-authored papers in diseases of the thyroid gland. She devoted much of her career to clinical practice and joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center in 2007. In addition to diabetes, her special interests include performing diagnostic thyroid ultrasounds and treatment of thyroid problems.

Yumi Imai, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Imai received her medical degree from University of Tohoku School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan. After she completed her internship and residency at Interfaith Medical Center in New York, she went to the University of Pennsylvania for a fellowship in Endocrinology. She also received research trainings at National Institutes of Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and University of Pennsylvania. She was Clinical Instructor at Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine before joining EVMS in March 2009.
Dr. Imai has experience in care of diabetes, obesity, and broad range of endocrine disorders. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology/Diabetes. Her research interest is to understand the mechanisms of islet dysfunction in obesity. She has published in journals, including Endocrinology, Physiological Genomics, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Journal of Clinical Investigation.

David C. Lieb, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Lieb joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center after completing his fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism in 2009 at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville. During his fellowship Dr. Lieb studied the hormonal mechanisms underlying high blood pressure, and co-authored articles involving blood pressure-lowering medications, diabetes, and obesity. He was named the 2008 Warren Trust Postdoctoral Fellow by the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control, and received the University of Virginia’s Department of Medicine Outstanding Clinical Fellow Award in 2009. In addition to general endocrine conditions, his clinical interests include high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. His research interests include inflammation, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Jagdeesh Ullal, MD, MS Assistant Professor of Medicine
Dr. Ullal hails from Bangalore, India is now a resident of Norfolk, Virginia. He first joined the Strelitz Diabetes Center at Eastern Virginia Medical School as a graduate student after obtaining his primary medical degree Kasturba Medical College Mangalore, India. Upon completion of Graduate studies in Biomedical Science Research from EVMS, he went on to finish a American Diabetes Association sponsored research fellowship and worked on autoimmune dysfunction associated with diabetic neuropathy. He successfully completed Internship and Residency training in Internal Medicine and then Fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at EVMS and is now an Assistant Professor in the Endocrine Division and a director of the bone density screening program at the Strelitz Diabetes Center. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes. His research interests are in the area of diabetes microvacular complications and diabetic neuropathy and he has published journal articles, book chapters, case reports and has had poster presentations at national conferences. His other interests are pituitary diseases, male hypogonadism, clinical bone densitometry and thyroid ultrasonography.
