The EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center (SDC) is a leader in diabetes care, research and education. The Center is home to an international team of experts who act as clinical providers, scientists and educators. The team’s holistic approach works to fulfill the Center’s patient-centric mission to improve quality of life for individuals with diabetes and metabolic hormone disorders.

The SDC offers the highest quality treatment and patient care in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetes-related conditions. Areas of specialty include:

• The prevention of debilitating complications of neuropathy and cardiovascular disease
• A worldwide referral center for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETS) offering unique expertise for evaluating tumors and for specialized care
• An Education Unit that provides a variety of tools for diabetes education and self-management

Ground-breaking Research and Discovery

Key to the exceptional level of care provided at the SDC is a steadfast commitment to new and innovative diabetes research in the unwavering search for a cure. Directors Jerry Nadler, MD and Aaron Vinik, MD, PhD, foster a cross-disciplinary, team-based approach that allows patients of EVMS to reap the benefits of a world-renown research program. Dr. Vinik’s discovery of the INGAP gene and Dr. Nadler’s efforts in pioneering the drug Lisofylline received international acclaim among scientists and the diabetes medical community.

The SDC Research Team regularly conducts clinical trials designed to develop and promote new treatments for diabetes.
