This Minority Physician Mentorship Program is comprised of area physicians from under-represented minority backgrounds, representing various medical specialties. The physicians serve as an additional source of mentor/advisor support for EVMS minority medical students. Many of these physicians are EVMS alumni, clinical and community faculty, and members of the Helen Mewborn Watts Society, the Greater Norfolk Medical Society of South Hampton Roads, the Old Dominion Medical Society, and the Peninsula Medical Society. The Helen Mewborn Watts Society was established in 1997. The society is named after the late Helen Mewborn Watts, M.D. (1919-1953), the first African-American female physician to practice in the Tidewater area. The society promotes education and fellowship among African-American female physicians in the Greater Hampton Roads area. It also serves as an avenue of mentorship for African-American female medical students and residents. |
