| Accessing the EVMS Network Through the Proxy Server |

What is a proxy server?
You must be connected to the Internet by a modem or network that accesses the Internet directly and not through another proxy server. You can then access restricted resources from off-campus. Note: Browser considerations: Your browser must have cookies and JavaScript enabled. AOL users must use an alternative browser to the AOL browser. Firewall considerations: Your firewall must allow http traffic on ports 80 and 2048; if you have an allow list, you must allow chekov.evms.edu. If you need assistance with EZproxy, call the EVMS Network Center Help Desk at 446-5871, or email them at

Turning Off Your Browser’s EVMS Proxy Server SettingsIf you have been using the old EVMS proxy server, which required configuring your browser for proxy connections, you can restore direct Internet Web site browsing with the following procedures: Netscape Communicator 4, 6, or 7Click "Edit," "Preferences" from the menu. In the Preferences dialog box, double-click "Advanced," then click "proxies." Click the radio button by "Direct Connection to the Internet." Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the proxies dialog box. Internet Explorer 4, 6, or 7Click "View," "Internet options" from the menu. Click the "Connections" tab. In the area labeled "Proxy server," click the checkbox by the words "Access the Internet using a proxy server" to uncheck it. Click OK, OK. Internet Explorer 5 or 6Click "Tools," "Internet options" from the menu. Click the "Connections" tab. Click "Default Connection Settings" and/or the "LAN Settings" button near the bottom of the dialog box. Click the checkbox labeled "Use Automatic configuration script" to remove the checkmark. Click OK, OK. Logging OnWhen you access the EVMS Library Web page at http://www.evms.edu/evmslib and select a restricted resource, you will automatically be presented with an authentication box requiring two entries, username and password. The username and password are the same as your regular (Novell) logon that you use every day on campus.
Click the OK button, and you should see the Web page for the selected resource. If you experience difficulty, please call the EVMS Network Center at 446-5871.
