The EVMS General Surgery residency program is divided into two components. The first year is designated as the “core” component, which provides the basic science education necessary for all surgeons. The final four years of the curriculum are devoted to general surgery education.

The department follows a structured curriculum that meets the educational goals and objectives for graduate medical education as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
