Resident Evaluation Processes
Clinical rotation performance: The resident’s performance is evaluated upon completion of each rotation by the faculty and chief resident of the service.
Biannual Reviews: Each resident meets individually with the Chairman of the Department of Surgery to discuss mutual concerns, performance, and career goals. The Chairman meets on an ad hoc basis with residents for counseling and resolution of any problems.
Residency Review Committee: Each resident’s performance is discussed at quarterly meetings of the Residency Review Committee and at regular faculty and educational committee meetings.
Oral Exams: During the third, fourth, and fifth years, two faculty members orally examine residents. These 30-minute exams test cognitive knowledge and allow for the demonstration of logical and sound clinical reasoning and problem solving skills.
Annual In-Training Exam: Each resident is required to take the annual American Board of Surgery In-Training/Surgical Basic Science Exam and is expected to score at or above the 30th percentile. Residents are counseled on noted strengths and deficiencies. A plan for study is developed as needs dictate.
Program Evaluation
Residents have four structured opportunities to evaluate the program and teaching staff.
Residents are asked to complete an “Evaluation of Service” form upon completion of each rotation. These evaluations are reviewed by the Chairman and are discussed at faculty meetings and Residency Review Committee meetings. The biannual reviews are an additional opportunity for residents to express their concerns or recommendations regarding the residency experience. Two residents are elected annually to sit on the Residency Review Committee. The Chairman holds quarterly meetings with the senior and chief residents to provide ongoing communication between faculty and housestaff. The report from the American Board of Surgery In-Training/Surgical Basic Science Exam is used to strengthen the General Surgery didactic curriculum.
