Research Interests

My research is focused in the area of cardiovascular behavioral medicine and psychiatric/behavioral genetics. My interdisciplinary research program aims to study the molecular-genetic and environmental influences on:

  • mood disorders
  • personality
  • cognitive abilities
  • lifestyle-related risk factors for cardiovascular disease

Most recently, my research focuses on neurobiologic mechanisms that may account for the co-morbidity between negative affectivity, depression and coronary artery disease using a molecular genetics approach.

Recent Grants and Funding Awards

Principle investigator of the study entitled Prospective Neuropsychosocial Screening for Heart Surgery to Prevent Brain Injury Study (Pro Heart & Brain Study) which is funded by the Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute for $49,422 from 8/1/09 to present. The goal of this pilot project is to evaluate whether differences in cognitive function exist between patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graph surgery versus multi-vessel angioplasty surgery and whether cognitive reserve measures and cholinergic function predict cognitive decline.

Principal Investigator of project entitled Donepezil's Effect on Cardiac Function in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease Through an In Vivo, Non Invasive Measure of Peripheral Neuro-cholinergic Function: Relation to Therapeutic Efficacy funded by Virginia Center on Aging (ARDRAF-Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Research Award Fund) for $37,500 from 7/1/10 to 6/30/11. This study will characterize cardiac autonomic function and potential relations to neuropsychological function in newly diagnosed, patients with Alzheimer's Disease as well as add to the understanding of donepezil's effect on cardiac autonomic and neuropsychological function in these patients.
