In addition, more than 70 community faculty of various disciplines contribute to our educational programs.

  1. The ACGME-approved Psychiatry Residency Training Program, which has 16 residency slots in the 2010-2011 academic year.
  2. APA-approved Pre-doctoral Clinical Psychology Internship Program, typically for seven interns. The Clinical Psychology Internship was expanded in 2006-2007 to include an additional intern in Pediatric Psychology within the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
  3. An APA-approved Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology jointly sponsored by EVMS in collaboration with the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. Entitled The Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology (VCPCP), this program provides doctoral training leading to the Psy.D. degree and carries approximately 40 graduate students, with 10 students in each of the primary training years.
  4. The AATA-approved master's degree in Art Therapy & Counseling program, which provides graduate training for 30 art therapists, divided into 15 students in each of the two years of this training program.
  5. Active participation in the EVMS undergraduate medical education programs, including core courses on psychopathology and human development, an undergraduate clerkship program in psychiatry and substance abuse, and fourth-year offerings in ten areas.

Research Programs

Faculty within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences are engaged in ongoing funded and unfunded research that generates many publications annually in the areas of sleep disorders, personality assessment, neuropsychology, psychopharmacology, cognitive therapy, and specific areas of psychopathology that may particularly include depression, eating disorders, and ADHD.

Several faculty are regularly asked to serve as journal reviewers and editorial board members. Dr. Archer is the founding editor of the journal Assessment. Our students are also routinely engaged in their own research. All of our doctoral dissertations (for the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology) and master's theses (for the Art Therapy Program) are available in the Brickell Medical Library at EVMS.
