Patient Services: Teenage Pregnancy Program Print E-mail
Share

teenageThe Teenage Pregnancy Program is a comprehensive program that provides prenatal care to teens from 11 to 18 years of age (average age 15½ years). Teen patients are seen by a select group of physicians, health care providers, and residents on specific clinic days to optimize the education and social support resources.

More than 90 percent of the teens continue their education throughout pregnancy. Parenting classes cover self-esteem, first aid, laboring signs, baby care, contraception, nutrition, immunizations, baby safety, and tours of the preterm baby nursery and labor and delivery suites.

The Resource Mother Program, in collaboration with Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, assists with transportation to and from prenatal appointments and provides surrogate guardians, if needed, and community mentors to assist young mothers. The goals of this program are to teach adolescent women about contraception, the importance of continuing education, parenting skills, and life coping skills after delivery.
