Obstetrics and Gynecology residents receive hands-on technical training through the clinical-skills simulation laboratory located at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The center includes a computerized laparoscopic simulator, mother/baby interactive model, advanced childbirth simulator, knot-tying trainer, episiotomy trainer, and interactive pelvis and female perineum.

The system also gives residents additional practice in using forceps and vacuum. Residents are expected to master basic and advanced skills at graduated intervals with direct faculty supervision.

The schedule of procedures taught by post-graduate year is:

PGY-1

  • Knot tying (two-handed, one-handed)
  • Vaginal delivery:
    • Cardinal movements
    • Identifying fetal position
    • Shoulder dystocia
    • Episiotomy repair

PGY-2

  • 4th degree episiotomy
  • Vaginal delivery:
    • Shoulder dystocia
    • Vaginal breech
    • Vacuum delivery
    • Tubal ligation
      • Basic laparoscopy skills

PGY-3

  • Review of PGY-2 skills plus:
    • Forceps
    • Piper
    • Keilland
      • Advanced laparoscopy skills
        sim-lab
        Stephen Davis, M.D., Ob/Gyn generalist, trains residents in the simulation lab.

PGY-4

  • Review of PGY-3 skills plus:
    • IUD insertion
    • Group obstetrical emergency drills
