Curriculum - Descriptions of Rotations

Gynecologic Oncology

The Gynecologic Oncology rotation at EVMS is designed for second-, third- and fourth-year residents offering six months of training in total. Experience and continuity are maximized for the senior resident, who rotates for three consecutive months. Residents work one-on-one with five oncologists who operate at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.

Structure

The junior rotation emphasizes the clinical evaluation process and contributes to the formation of strong fundamental surgical principles. At the chief level, the resident gains significant experience in laparotomy, laparoscopy and vaginal surgery. The resident also is trained in choosing the most appropriate times to refer to an oncologist.

Residents care for patients in the outpatient setting, seeing a high volume of patients per office session with the gynecologic oncologists. Residents learn the principles of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and the care of geriatric cancer patients. Experiences emphasize the assessment of would-be malignancies, including the effective evaluation of the pelvic mass, vulvar and cervical dysplasia, gestational trophoblastic disease and GOG protocols in chemotherapy.

Residents participate in multidisciplinary tumor board presentations and the instruction of medical students, and have the opportunity to conduct a senior research project with the oncologists. The senior experience culminates in an oral examination based on a case list prepared by the senior resident.

Teaching

Training is one-on-one hands-on with the oncologists. Oncology topics are featured during didactic sessions, Grand Rounds and Journal Club.

Supervision

Five board-certified oncologists from Virginia Oncology Associates teach and supervise residents on the gynecologic oncology service as community faculty of the EVMS Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
