Program Description

Our division at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is staffed by 8 dynamic full time MFM faculty members with expertise in diverse areas of clinical obstetrics. The supporting staff includes 14 sonographers, 5 genetic counselors, 4 diabetes educators, 2 nurse practitioners, 2 physician assistants, and a research nurse.

The unique features of the MFM fellowship at EVMS include:

  1. extensive experience with prenatal ultrasonography, including fetal echocardiography
  2. rotations scheduled so that each fellow gets 18 months of uninterrupted research time to ensure completion of their thesis before graduation
  3. possible involvement in obstetric care in developing countries
  4. experience with invasive procedures, including CVS
  5. availability of Clinical Skill Simulation labs
  6. comprehensive experience in medical and surgical complications of obstetrics.

Annually, we do 16,000 sonographic examinations and almost 3,200 genetic consultations. In the past year, we had over 3,000 deliveries, 1,300 antenatal admissions, 600 maternal transports and managed 450 pregestational diabetics.

Every week, fellows will benefit from didactics given by one of the 8 MFM faculty in the division, or by one of the faculty from the medical school. Additionally, at the monthly didactic meetings, fellows will learn more about critical care, prenatal diagnosis, pediatric cardiology, infectious disease, and clinical research.

In essence, the MFM Fellowship Program at EVMS provides a healthy balance between clinical expertise and research opportunities to enable the fellows to optimize their academic and clinical potentials.
