Medical Student Program Medical Molecular and Cellular Biology, better known as MMCB, is a core component of the first year medical curriculum. This course is divided into four sections designed to progressively introduce and emphasize major cellular functions and processes that form the basis for advances in therapeutics and modern molecular medicine. These topics will be increasingly needed by physicians applying individualized, molecular-based diagnoses and treatments. A number of full-time faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology are involved in teaching this course, with the assistance of EVMS physicians and the faculty of the Division of Medical Genetics of the Department of Pediatrics. The Medical Microbiology and Immunology Course is offered in the fall semester for second-year medical students. The course is divided into five sections: Immunology, Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology and Parasitology. Instruction involves didactic lectures, clinical correlation conferences, and hands-on laboratories. Student electives in Clinical Virology, Clinical Immunology, and Cancer Research are available for third- and fourth-year medical students. Both full time and part-time faculty members participate in teaching this course. The Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology offers research opportunities for Ph.D. and Masters students in the areas cell biology, tumor biology, molecular biology, immunology, and infectious disease through the Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. and Masters Research Programs at EVMS. This program takes an integrated approach to graduate education, with students initially taking an interdisciplinary program of study that provides a breadth of knowledge spanning the basic biomedical sciences. With this knowledge as a foundation, students then explore specific biomedical problems in advanced courses and research. Faculty members in the Department serve as mentors to doctoral students interested in pursuing research in their areas of concentration. The Masters Research program offers three tracks - Thesis, Biotechnology and Non-Thesis designed to meet the specific needs and requirements of the individual student. Postdoctoral Fellowship Program The Department's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers advanced training and research opportunities for fellows who have received their M.D. or Ph.D. degrees. Postdoctoral fellows undertake specific research projects under the guidance of Department faculty members and participate in journal clubs and seminar programs designed to foster discussion of new and interesting research.
