Past Events2011 Faculty and Staff Awards ReceptionStaff and Faculty of EVMS gathered at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott on Tuesday November 1st for the President's Service Awards and the Dean's Faculty Achievement Awards. At the ceremony, Dr. Amy Tang was awarded the Dean's Faculty Achievement Award for Research and Dr. Ann Campbell received the Dean's Faculty Achievement Award for mentoring. Congratulations to these two deserving winners!! 23rd Annual Research Day
Researchers from all over EVMS gathered on Friday, October 14th for the 23rd Annual Research Day. At the platform presentations, Kristin Sica, a medical student, presented the research work that she perfomed in the laboratory of Dr. Amy Tang using a novel approach to targeting the Ras pathway as a potential treatment for cervical cancer. A postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Tang's lab, Dr. Minglei Bian, also presented his research on SIAH2 and its regulation of the Ras pathway in human cancer cells. The other presenters also have ties to the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology - Julia Sharp, a PhD student, presented her research on complement evasion mechanisms of the important bacterial pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus. This work was part of a collaboration with Dr. Julius Nyalwidhe and Dr. Neel Krishna. Dr. Clifford Mauriello presented his work on the role of complement activation in the pathogenesis of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy in neonates. Dr. Mauriello performed this research under the mentorship of Dr. Kenji Cunnion, a member of the Department of Pediatrics with a joint appointment in our Department. The platform presentations were followed by a poster session, in which several of our Departmental students and fellows participated.
AIDS Research ConsortiumThe Second Semi-Annual Meeting of the Virginia Universities AIDS Research Consortium (VUARC) was held Friday, Oct. 7, at the Wyndham Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach. The meeting was an all-day affair sponsored primarily by the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology (MMCB) at EVMS. The meeting, officially organized by Dr. Edward Johnson, featured oral presentations by Drs. Woong-Ki Kim and Dianne Daniel in addition to Dr. Johnson, all of the MMCB department. Numerous EVMS faculty were present, including some involved in the clinical treatment of AIDS. Altogether, the meeting had approximately 60 attendees, including several from VCU, George Mason University and UVA. There was an excellent turnout of EVMS students. Research from EVMS was primarily oriented toward neurological complications of AIDS and highlighted notable new results. Particularly, new targets for anti-HIV therapy were identified, the ways in which HIV co-opts the immune system in the brain was outlined, and the source of a subset of white blood cells infecting the brain was discovered.
