Welcome from the Program Director

castaldoWelcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program of Eastern Virginia Medical School.  I am very pleased that you are interested in our program.  Deciding where to pursue your residency training can be a difficult decision, with many factors to consider.  As you begin to look at websites, travel for interviews and research what each program has to offer, you may feel that there are more similarities than differences between programs, and to an extent, that is true.  However, as Program Director, I’d like to share with you some of the aspects of our program that make EVMS unique.

First of all, I think the theme you’ll hear repeatedly during your visit is that EVMS fosters a family atmosphere.  With 10 categorical spots per year, our program is a tight-knit community.  Our residents are a diverse group, including previous artists, surgeons and PhDs.  You’ll find a fun-loving atmosphere and general camaraderie amongst the residents.  Furthermore, the faculty is approachable and it’s not uncommon to find them socializing with a group of residents.

Second, our academic faculty is devoted to teaching.  Our faculty actively participates in research, including a recent grant awarded to the Strelitz Diabetes Center for their on-going work in Diabetes research.  Teaching is focused on up-to-date, evidence-based medicine, providing our residents with an exceptional knowledge base and clinical skill set.

Finally, the training you will receive at EVMS is top-notch.  Location is everything and the Hampton Roads area has a population of about 1.7 million people, making it the 4th largest metropolitan area in the southeast.  You will find that the diversity of the patient population at Norfolk General Hospital can’t be matched.  Additionally, it is the area’s only Level I trauma center and the Sentara Heart Hospital was ranked in 2009 by US News and World Reports as one of the best in the country. Whether you decide to pursue a fellowship or practice general medicine, you can rest assured that you will be well-trained and successful in your pursuits.

As you can tell, I am very proud of our program, faculty and housestaff.  If you have any questions after exploring our website, feel free to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The program emphasizes comprehensive training in general internal medicine, which prepares our residents for practice as a hospitalist, general internal medicine, or to enter advanced training in subspecialty medicine.  In addition to our categorical program, the Department of Medicine offers a combined Internal Medicine/Geriatrics, a combined Family Medicine/Internal Medicine residency as well as a Preliminary Internal Medicine Track.
