The Endocrinology Fellowship Program is a fully accredited two-year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.  Eligible applicants must have received their M.D. or D.O. degree from a medical or osteopathic school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. All applicants must have completed training to qualify for board eligibility in Internal Medicine.

The Department seeks individuals who have excelled in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate medical training, including courses in basic science and clinical medicine, standardized examinations, research, medical and non-medical extracurricular activities; in both their undergraduate and graduate activities.

Description:

The goal of the Postgraduate Training Program at EVMS is to produce endocrinologists who are well trained in all of the following components of metabolic disease:

  1. Provision of total patient management in type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, including their complications.
  2. Endocrine management of diseases of the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and reproductive systems.
  3. Parathyroid and metabolic bone disease.
  4. Common metabolic abnormalities such as the dyslipidemias. 
  5. Expertise in diagnostic thyroid ultrasonography, as well as its use in fine needle aspiration.
  6. Expertise in the interpretation of bone density studies.
  7. Administrative aspects of provision of endocrine care services with particular emphasis on process improvement and resource management.
  8. Participation in biomedical research and the acquisition of expertise in protocol design and medical writing.

The successful graduate will possess all of the tools necessary to assume the role of an outstanding endocrinologist and provide optimal patient care in either an academic or community environment.

Curriculum:

The training sites for the Endocrinology Fellowship will include Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the EVMS Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center.

All fellows will participate in dictation of admission H & P or consultation, daily rounds, progress notes and orders on their patients; supervising residents and students as required; and courtesy evaluation of non-teaching service patients if requested by nursing staff or the attending physician. This would include responding to emergency situations.


Fellows will also participate in the Endocrinology Core Lecture Series, a weekly core curriculum series designed to provide the basic science and clinical knowledge necessary to practice Endocrinology. Other educational activities include a monthly journal club as well as the division's weekly Grand Rounds

All fellows will be assigned a continuity clinic two afternoons per week. In addition dedicated time for thyroid ultrasonography and thyroid nodule biopsy is provided during the second year.
