Based on their experiences, combined faculty and residents put together the following “Free Time” activity suggestions for Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Hampton Roads area.

Baseball – taking in Tidewater Tides game (Met’s AAA Farm Team) at Norfolk’s Harbor Park, which overlooks the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River.

Sunbathing-Just a short distance from EVMS,you can enjoy the warms sands and cool water of Virginia Beach. Surfing, skim boarding, body boarding are just a few things to do.

Rollerblading – on the seawall in Virginia Beach.

Opera – attending a performance of the Virginia Opera Company at the Harrison Opera House in downtown Norfolk.

Bicycling – through First Landing State Park located on the oceanfront in Virginia Beach or along the Colonial Parkway between Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown.

Basketball - attending an Old Dominion Lady Monarchs basketball game.

Cinema – walking to the Naro Theater in Ghent (Norfolk) to see a highly acclaimed foreign film or eating dinner while watching a recent release at the Commodore Theater in Portsmouth.

Social Hour – getting together once a month on Friday evenings for a residency-sponsored social hour with residents and faculty.

Summer Concert Series – sitting on a blanket by the world’s largest natural harbor watching coal colliers and aircraft carriers go by while listening to the Continental Army Band play at historic Fort Monroe, a short drive from downtown Norfolk.

Grand Illumination – visiting Williamsburg to celebrate the lighting of the holiday decorations (50 minute drive from Norfolk).

Mariner's Museum – touring one of the worlds’ foremost maritime museums in Newport News, VA (30 minutes from Norfolk). The museum is located on the James River and a wooded trail located on the property makes for a nice walk.

Hampton Air and Space Museum – visiting the Air and Space Museum in Downtown Hampton, VA. Hampton is home to NASA Langley Research Center and the Mercury Space Program. Immediately adjacent to the museum is a beautiful old Carousel your children, nieces, and nephews will enjoy visiting.

Racing or Jogging – the streets of Hampton Roads in races organized by the Striders.

Battleship Wisconsin/Nauticus Maritime Museum – these attractions are located on the waterfront in downtown Norfolk.

Dining Out – at one of Norfolk’s many outstanding restaurants, whose fare draws patrons from adjacent cities.

TGIF – Friday evenings on the waterfront in downtown Norfolk with free music.
