PFM has always placed an emphasis on nurturing residents who wish to With EVMS nearby, residents are given ample opportunity to teach medical students rotating through the clinic. Also, residents may chose to facilitate small groups of first- or second-year medical students in their "Introduction to the Patient" class. Residents also participate in teaching other residents in formal and informal sessions and coordinate didactics with their attending physician partner.
Adolescent Medicine PFM is f Many opportunities for adolescent medicine are available throughout the residency, including special rotations. Residents also participate by performing sports physicals in Portsmouth Public Schools.
PFM's OB program is supervised by family practice attendings who have special qualifications Newly incorporated into our program is a new concept in group visits. We currently conduct two: Centering Pregnancy and Centering Parentings. This allows our residents additional opportunities to interact with their OB patients, as well as to improve their patient education skills. Deliveries are attended at the Family Birth Center at Bon Secours Maryview Hospital. Residents also spend several sessions a week at the Portsmouth Health Department conducting OB and GYN clinics. This system provides excellent mentoring for those residents interested in including obstetrics in their future practices. Our program also has significant exposure to all aspects of geriatric medicine. Two of PFM's faculty, Drs. Bikowski and Brittman, are board-certified in geriatrics. They, and several other faculty, do home visits with residents. Institutional care is taught at the academic nursing home where each resident follows several patients during second and third year. As third years, residents are scheduled to participate as guest speakers in our television show "What's Up Doc," filmed at the Portsmouth Senior Center every other month.
All residents are required to complete scholarly activity. Recently, our residents have participated in a variety of projects which have included book chapters, IRB approved research, QI projects, and poster presentations. Residents participate in either individual projects or studies headed by a faculty member. Current areas of research include:
All third year residents are required to present their project at the Annual Dept. of Family & Community Medicine Research Day in May.
For residents with a special interest in rural health, elective time may be spent away from the program in remote sites, nationally and internationally. Students can participate in "Operation Smile" or "Physicians for Peace," as well as other opportunities in third-world countries.
The residents at PFM are fortunate to have the opportunity to rotate with several exceptional sports medicine physicians. This provides excellent mentoring experiences for residents interested in including sports medicine in their future practices. Several faculty members also have an interest in sports medicine. Additionally, residents participate in sports physicals and have opportunities to serve as team physicians. More Program Benefits
