Over four years Combined Family Medicine/Internal Medicine Residents have the opportunity to become competent with the procedures listed below.
Inpatient Procedures - these skills can be acquired while on many rotations including:
- 11 months of inpatient adult medicine
- 3 months of ICU
- 1 months of inpatient pediatrics, 1 month of nursery
- 1 month of neurology
- Adult emergency medicine
- Pediatric ER
- Arterial line
- Arthocentesis
- Bone marrow biopsies
- Central lines
- Joint aspiration and injection
- Lumbar puncture
- Nasogastric intubation
- Paracentesis
- Swan Ganz catheterization
- Thoracentesis
- Venipuncture
Outpatient Procedures - these skills are learned in the family practice center during weekly half-day patient care sessions and while on five block months in the family practice center. Residents gain additional experience with these procedures during subspecialty rotations such as orthopedics, dermatology, gastroenterology and cardiology (2 months).
