Welcome to Portsmouth Family Medicine! Thank you for your interest in our program. Our residency program was established in 1977 and we are the largest primary care practice in the area.

margaret     Portsmouth Family Medicine is part of Eastern Virginia Medical School. We are located in     downtown Portsmouth, off the main campus and 10 minutes away from Norfolk and 20 minutes  from Virginia Beach. We are a community based program and the only residency program at 466-bed Bon Secours Maryview Hospital. Our residents are first-responders and are the leaders on the Rapid Response and Code Blue team in the hospital. This training enhances their skills and expertise in hospital medicine and that is why 30% of our recent graduates made hospital medicine their career choice which is substantially higher then national or local statistics. Our exceptional training in hospital medicine is complimented by the training in our electronic health records base outpatient clinic which was recently recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home  at Level 3 (highest level) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

We are proud to provide our residents with a well-rounded curriculum that is tailored to their educational goals. Our three year American Board of Family Medicine cumulative pass rate is 100%. Our graduates work in the inpatient and outpatient settings, urgent care centers and public health centers, emergency department and academic settings. Our graduates continued their training in obstetrics, occupational medicine and geriatrics fellowships.

We are committed to our community. Our residents provide care at the Oasis Homeless clinic, H.E.R shelter for battered women and children, and Portsmouth Health Department. Our residents have an opportunity to obtain additional training in Public Health through Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University which can be credited toward the future Masters of Public Health training if desired.

Portsmouth Family Medicine and its faculty are committed to education, evidence-based patient care and research. Our residents are bright, ambitious, hardworking, eager to learn young professionals just like you! I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our program.

 PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The philosophy of the Portsmouth Family Medicine Residency is to support our residents in an environment that promotes expert, compassionate, and comprehensive care. We focus on treating the entire family and caring for the whole person - body, mind, and spirit.

We believe that as a family physician you need to be a diagnostician, counselor, scientist, teacher, and friend, working as a part of your community. Our goal is to enable you to discover your unique potential as a healer.

As the only residency in our progressive community hospital, our residents receive unparalleled education and experience in caring for a wide range of patients. From the ER to the ICU, neonates to hospice patients, and from common ailments to esoteric diagnoses, Portsmouth Family Medicine residents are at the forefront of patient care.

PFM is also in the unique position of having all of the advantages of being part of a nearby medical school, while concurrently benefiting from the guidance of our outstanding community faculty.

Our commitment to improving the health care of Portsmouth’s citizens is evident in our outreach activities. In this setting, our residents have ample opportunity to explore special interests. Our clinic has been recognized as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) at Level Three (highest level)  as outlined by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
