Ghent Family Medicine will only review completed applications sent to us via ERAS by our deadline which is November 1, 2011. Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) Our residency accepts applications via ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service of the Association of American Medical Colleges, available at http://www.aamc.org/eras/ or 202-828-0413. Your ERAS application should include:
Applicants with previous residency training must also submit:
International Medical Graduates: In GeneralWe do review complete ERAS applications of international medical graduates with outstanding academic records. To be competitive, an applicant should have experience that demonstrates interest in family medicine or primary care medicine. Letters of reference must address the applicant's suitability for family medicine training, including motivation, interpersonal skills, clinical skills and medical knowledge. U.S. Clinical ExperienceApplicants must have at least 900 hours of U.S. clinical experience, or a combination of U.S. and Canadian or U.K. clinical experience. This would equate to about 5 months of full-time, 40 hour per week experience at a minimum. U.S. experience should take place in both outpatient primary care and inpatient settings. It should include family medicine experience, or a combination of U.S. experiences that are important components of family medicine (such as several months each of internal medicine, pediatrics, and OB/GYN). At least some of this experience must be hands-on. Observation / shadowing can be included in the 900 hours. Research experience would not be counted. Letters of reference must address the applicant's suitability for family medicine training, including motivation, interpersonal skills, clinical skills and medical knowledge. The minimum experience must be attained by our application cutoff date, which is November 1st. USMLE Cut-Offs
Year of GraduationWe do not have a year of graduation cutoff, but qualified candidates will have remained clinically active since graduating, keeping their knowledge and skills up-to-date. Spoken / Written English Language AbilityExcellent spoken and written English is very important due not only to the need for residents to communicate with their supervisors, colleagues, other medical personnel, consultants, etc., but also because they are expected to be able to teach junior residents and medical students. Also, and very importantly, residents must be able to communicate with their patients with reliable precision and sensitivity, to reliably produce meaningful two-way understanding. Communication with patients really demands that a candidate has actually worked in the type of medical setting he'll be training in, and with the population of patients he'll be seeing both at the family medical center and on rotations. A certain amount of acculturation is expected and needed in order to function effectively. VisasGhent Family Medicine will sponsor J-1 visas only.
Additional requirements for international medical graduates:
Credit for Previous Residency Experience For the 2012 Match, we plan to accept only candidates for PGY-1 positions.
In general, applicants who wish to seek credit for previous residency training are reminded that the American Board of Family Medicine allows up to 12 months of credit for previous postgraduate experience. Credit for previous residency rotations may be given if the previous experience corresponds with rotations in the Ghent Family Medicine Residency curriculum, and if the structure of the residency in the years affected will support such credit.
