The Department of Community and Family Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School has a strong Division of Family Medicine Obstetrics that is under the supervision of board-certified family physicians (working with community based board-certified obstetrician/gynecologists) who are dedicated to ensuring an environment that is supportive of the acquisition of proficiency in caring for women's health issues.

Rotations on Family Medicine Obstetrics are structured to provide AAFP-recommended proficiency in preconception counseling, antenatal care, management of labor, vaginal and vacuum deliveries, postpartum care and circumcision of newborn males. Training in the interpretation of electronic fetal monitor tracings is strongly emphasized.

Gynecologic office experiences occur at a variety of community locations, including the very busy Portsmouth Naval Medical Center Department of Gynecology.  Gynecology consults in the very busy Emergency Departments and on the medical floors at Maryview Medical Center and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital provide frequent opportunities for varying experiences in gynecologic care.  Within the continuity clinic settings at Ghent Family Medicine and Portsmouth Family Medicine, experiences with colposcopy, insertion of intrauterine devices and Implanon are easily available.  Additional exposure and/or participation (for those who desire) in surgical procedures such as Caesarean sections, hysterectomy, laparoscopy, LEEP and laser surgery are also available.
