lectureConferences

Every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekly resident conference is held in our dedicated classroom. Four hours each week is dedicated to lectures by EM faculty, EM residents or faculty from other Departments. In addition, there is a half-hour lunch (provided) and a half-hour is devoted to Tintinalli Study Guide review: residents quiz each other on that week's reading. During the course of the year, the entire Study Guide is reviewed.

Journal Club

Journal Club (JC) is conducted the last Monday of each month (except December and June). Usually from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the location of the JC alternates between the home of a faculty member or resident and an area restaurant. Evidence- based medicine criteria are used to evaluate the literature. Dinner is provided.

Mock Oral Board Exams

Four to six times each year, EM faculty conduct mock oral board exams for the benefit of the residents. These exams are conducted just like those administered by the American Board of Emergency Medicine for board certification. The resident gains valuable experience in this type of testing format.

Educational Activities

Book Fund: Each year, every resident is given $300 to spend on texts, journals, conferences, etc. for the benefit of your education.

Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Meeting: Each year, the Department sends all of our PGY-Is to the Annual SAEM Meeting. The Department pays for travel costs to and from the meeting, registration, and a stipend for hotel and meals. Attendance at this meeting provides our EM residents with exposure to cutting-edge research, new clinical information and a chance to interact with residents and faculty from other EM departments across the country.

Ultrasound Course: The Department conducts a two-day Ultrasound Course for all of our PGY-II residents. Residents gain hands-on experience in the use of ultrasound in the Emergency Department (ED). Topics covered include Trauma FAST exam, Gallbladder, AAA, early pregnancy, cardiac and vascular access imaging. This course lays the ground work for both attendings and residents to attain a high level of confidence in using the ultrasound in the ED.

Animal Procedure Lab: Each year, every EM resident attends a half-day Animal Procedure Lab at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, conducted by their Department of Emergency Medicine. EM residents have the opportunity to refine their skills in performing various procedures, including venous cutdown, tube thoracostomy, pericardiocentesis, thoracotomy and crichothyrotomy.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor Courses: The Department will pay the registration fee for all PGY-I or PGY-II residents who successfully complete these courses.

Difficult Airway Course: The program pays for each PGY-II resident to attend the nationally recognized Difficult Airway Course, sponsored by Dr. Ron Walls and associates. This 2-1/2 day, intensive course provides residents with superb didactic and hands-on experience in managing the difficult airway.
