The Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center was founded in 1989 to respond to the need to expand medical care and support services for persons living with HIV infection and AIDS in Eastern Virginia. The Center links the resources of Eastern Virginia.

The mission of the HIV/AIDS Resource Center is to provide training, education, and information to health-care industry professionals who care for people infected with HIV.

Services

The HIV/AIDS Resource Center offers a range of services to health care professionals, including:

• Education:  Please call the AIDS Resource Center at (757) 446-6170 in regard  to classes presently being offered. 
• Resources:  Information and referral services to multiple community resources are provided to persons infected with HIV.
• Consultation: Direct consultation between health care providers and consultants is available.
• Training programs are developed for specific disciplines in the health care industry on a broad range of AIDS- related issues. 
• Media Materials: The latest technical, audiovisual, and educational materials for staff and patient education are available. Library services include database searches, interlibrary loans, current awareness information, and answers to reference questions.

The services of the Center are provided through a grant via the Virginia Department of Health.

Peer Educator Class

The admission criteria is: HIV positive individual with a desire to learn, teach, and function as a positive role model. Candidates for certification must be able and committed to complete ALL components of the program and attend all five consecutive Wednesday sessions in order to receive a Peer Educator certificate. Upon completion of this program, Peer Educators will be able to successfully complete a post-test with a passing score and give a 20 minute presentation to be evaluated by their peers. Applications for the next class may be obtained by calling the AIDS Resource Center at (757) 446-6170. This class is generally offered twice a year.
