EVMS Construction Activity Around Campus Print E-mail
Share

revisedroadway_Page_1Please pardon our progress during the Eastern Virginia Medical Center Campus Roadway Improvement Project.

Over the next several months, this project will touch the Visitor Garage, Olney Road, Fairfax Avenue, Children's Lane, and Wagner Road. These changes to traffic flow and pedestrian movement will make travel on our campus a safer and easier experience for patients, visitors and employees.

Handicapped parking spaces will always be available. At various times during construction, they may be moved to different locations, including the first floor of the Visitor Garage. An important part of the project is the creation of new handicapped spaces near each of the hospitals to replace the loss of handicapped spaces in the visitor surface lot.

All campus roads will remain open at all times during construction, but there will be times when roads are reduced to a single lane. There will always be a pedestrian path available, but at times certain sidewalks will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be redirected. The contractors will do all they can to ensure traffic and pedestrian safety with clear and precise signage and flagmen where necessary, so be on the lookout for signage regarding new traffic and pedestrian patterns.

We will do our best to provide advance notification of changes, but please understand and plan for delays.

Construction on Fairfax and Children's Lane

Construction will begin on the intersection of Fairfax Avenue and the extension of Children's Lane (adjacent to Andrews Hall) on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011. On Monday, Aug. 15, construction workers will be setting up detour lanes and signage to direct traffic and pedestrians around this area. Campus Security will be available to help direct traffic during this time.

Parkers in the staff garage and the parking lot behind Andrews Hall will be mostly affected by this construction. Alternate routing is available using the Fairfax Avenue/Olney Road intersection adjacent to Hofheimer Hall.

If you have any questions and/or concerns, contact campus security at 446-5911. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during this time of progress.

          Transportation Improvements: Next Steps

The change in traffic lanes at the Olney/Fairfax intersection is moving forward. The next step is to begin the sidewalk improvements immediately alongside Sentara in back of the E.R. In order to install the new sidewalk, there will be some demolition of existing plant materials as well as the irrigation system to make way for the sidewalk and eventually the handicapped parking spaces at that location. Please be alert to new vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns in this area.

Early next week, work will also begin on the extension of Children's Lane on the west side of the visitor garage. We will set up temporary pedestrian walkways in anticipation of the street work required there. Again, please be alert to new pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns in this area. Also with these changes there will always be new temporary signage. Please pay close attention to all temporary signage. It is constantly changing.

Also, Sunday, July 10, the bus stop will be reactivated at its original location and the barricades will come down on the elbow curve between Sentara and CHKD.

          Visitor Garage Transition

There will be some traffic flow changes coming Monday morning (6/20). We will begin using one of the visitor garage's new exits on that day.

All visitor garage traffic, when exiting, will empty onto Wagner Lane instead of Fairfax Avenue. Some parkers from the handicap spaces in the surface lot will still exit onto Fairfax Avenue.

The current entrance to the garage and surface lot will remain in place until the following Monday (6/27). On that date, all visitor garage traffic will begin to use the new entrance. All visitors entering the visitor garage will enter from Wagner Lane. Some handicapped parking will still be available in the surface lot from the original entrance.

Starting Monday (6/20), Wagner Lane will become two-way traffic. Please pay attention to the new traffic patterns. There will be ample signage in place Monday morning. EVMS police will be assisting with traffic flow and pedestrian crossing. Please be patient and obey all signage. If you see anything that is questionable or is a safety concern, please report it immediately to physical facilities or security.

Lane closures around medical center (Posted 6/2/2011)

Beginning Monday, June 6, and continuing for approximately two weeks, Wagner Lane and Olney Road will be closed to one lane only for laying of a new raised crosswalk.

After that is complete, milling the road and laying new asphalt on Wagner and Olney to Colley Avenue will take place. We apologize for this inconvenience and ask for your continued cooperation

Work at Lewis Hall south entrance (Posted 5/27/2011)

Please note we will have to close the South entrance (Olney Rd. side) of Lewis Hall from Tuesday, May 31 until Thursday, June 9.

We will be replacing the entrance doors as well as adding another set of doors to create a new vestibule. There will also be some concrete demolition as well as new concrete being poured in that area. For everyone's safety please avoid these door during this time frame. This area will be clearly marked and inaccessible for all four days.

As always, the only exception will be in case of an emergency, such as fire, or other need to evacuate the building.

Work around Hofheimer Hall (Posted 5/24/2011)

For approximately one week we will be working in and around the new Staff Garage, in  addition to making some concrete repairs. There will be disruption to pedestrian traffic around the new garage as well as some of the sidewalks near the back of Hofheimer Hall.

We also will be replacing the sidewalk that ties the pedestrian bridge that crosses over Brambleton Ave. to the garages. Contractors will be cutting concrete and using heavy equipment to remove concrete. Please avoid these areas if at all possible. If you must travel near these areas please remain out of any construction area and follow all detours.

We apologize for the late notice but this is the final phase before we open the new visitor parking lot behind Hofheimer.

Bus stop location to move temporarily (Posted 5/6/2011)

Beginning May 15, 2011, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will relocate the existing bus stop from its location at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters to a temporary location on Fairfax Avenue between Andrews Hall and Hofheimer Hall while improvements are made to Olney Road. The construction work is expected to take 60 days.

HRT will notify all of its customers during the next week and will move the bus stop sign to the temporary location. Service will continue uninterrupted to the Eastern Virginia Medical Center (EVMC) campus.

          Lewis Hall first-floor corridor follow-up (Posted 4/27/2011)

With the remaining work in Lewis Hall, much of it is now in the main corridor of the first floor. Please be aware that there will be certain areas with restricted access on the first floor in the evenings beginning around 6:00 p.m. and lasting throughout the night. These areas will be under construction for approximately another five more weeks. There will always be access throughout the building but at times some areas of the corridor may be restricted.

Please follow any signage and/or direction from the construction crews for access. We have decided to do as much of this work as possible in the evenings to help with accessibility and cause less disruption. Please let me know if you have any questions.

          Thank you for your cooperation.

EVMS Street Renovation Project (Posted 4/22/2011)

We have finally received our permit from the city to begin working on the campus roadway improvements. We have already started blocking some parking spaces inside Visitor lot #2 and inside the Visitor's Garage. Please park only in designated areas, obey signage and observe barricades.

Starting Monday, we will begin demolition of the triangular-shaped median on Olney Rd. and begin some curb and sidewalk work on both ends of Wagner Rd. This will cause one lane of traffic to be blocked on Wagner, Olney and occasionally Fairfax Ave., each at different times during this phase. The lanes being blocked will systematically change depending on the area under construction. The purpose is to be prepared to handle two-way traffic on Wagner Rd. once the garage entrance and exit are relocated to the Wagner side. This phase (Wagner Rd., Olney Rd., Fairfax Ave. and Visitor's Garage) will last approximately 60-75 days.

Please be alert to new vehicular traffic patterns as well as pedestrian traffic patterns. These patterns will be constantly changing. There will be clear signage where necessary as well as traffic flagmen if needed. Our EVMS police will assist during high-traffic periods. Please allow extra time when traveling through the areas under construction. There will be delays. Please let me know if you see areas of concern or any safety issues and we will address them as quickly as possible.

          Thank you for your cooperation.
