Leading-edge ultrasound skills

For more than a century, physicians have relied on the stethoscope to help diagnose patient ills. Now, with the miniaturization of technology, the handheld ultrasound machine promises to assume the role as medicine's frontline diagnostic tool of choice.

Early in their careers, EVMS students learn to use this powerful and portable technology to look beneath the surface in real time. EVMS physicians and scientists are leading the way in incorporating ultrasound into the medical curriculum, encouraging its use at the bedside and finding new uses — such as EVMS-led research that is speeding the diagnosis of serious fetal heart problems.

In early 2014, EVMS hosted a national conference on ultrasound instruction in medical education. EVMS was selected based on the strength of its leadership in the field and its early adoption of ultrasound education into the medical curriculum.
