Applying to Residency Programs

Once the student identifies a career choice early in the M4 year, the process of application to residency programs begins. The Directory of Accredited Residencies ("The Green Book") is useful, as is the new computerized version "FREIDA" (available in the Library).

EVMS Resources for Residency Program Selection

There are many resources available within the school to help you in your residency searching process:

Workshops are held in April of M3, with department chairs and M4 students providing information on applying and interviewing for residencies.

Letters of Recommendation

Requests for Dean's letters should be made to the Office of Student Affairs (446-5805), with a list of names and addresses of residency program directors you wish to receive a letter.

Requests for letters of recommendation from department chairmen should be made to the departmental secretary and from other faculty members via their secretaries. Most letter writers will request a personal meeting with the student.

Transcripts

A transcript request form must be completed for each residency application. These forms are available in the Student Records Office, Lewis Hall.

Residency Interviewing Time

It is recommended that most students schedule one "vacation" month in the fall or January of the fourth year for residency interviews. Any additional time taken off from an elective for residency interviews must have the approval of the elective supervisor at the beginning of the rotation, with the exception of family practice, to which students must give notice two weeks prior to the beginning of the rotation.

Students may not take more than three (3) days off from any four-week elective for the purpose of residency interviews. Time off for residency interviews may not be taken during the first week of any rotation. During the last week of the rotation, students must be present for any examination. Notice of leave must be given to the Office of Education, rotation supervisor and supervising resident.

National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

For the past 26 years, over 90 percent of the programs approved for such training have participated in the National Resident Matching Program. The NRMP offers the student and the residency program a way to rank their choices confidentially. The NRMP "matches" the students' choices to the programs' choices with subsequent uniform confidential notification by mail in March of the year of graduation. (Note: Army, Navy and Air Force installations participate in separate ranking procedures.) The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) distributes information about NRMP.
