Young at Heart Service Learning

This service learning initiative grew out of ongoing volunteer work at PB Young Elementary School in Norfolk.

The school is located in Young Terrace, which is the largest public housing project in state of Virginia. The students epitomize the segment of the U.S. population that is underserved by our current healthcare systems. Participants in this service learning program serve and work with administrators and educators in the school, and under their supervision conduct several research and quality improvement tasks. The goal of the project is to provide a structured and safe environment for the children in this community, and provide supplementary instruction in exercise, nutrition, foundational education, and the fine arts.

Some feedback from students:

“…the faculty is comprised of some of the most dedicated people I have ever worked with.”

“…just as important for us as it is for the kids. …these kids have such great potential.”

    • SERVICE HYPOTHESIS

    • The "Big Idea" here is: If we spend time with at-risk children, read with them, and teach them healthy eating habits; then they will develop reading skills and will eat better, thus interupting the poverty cycle to some degree.
