Albero House

Albero House is a division of St. Mary’s Home, it is a long-term care home for young adults with severe physical and intellectual disabilities.EVMS students actively participate in activities as complex as helping residents to the pool, or as routine as helping them move to a lift or chair, or eat.  Students will participate in process improvement design.

Last year, four students were initially assigned to Albero House, and one of them, after his first visit, wasn’t sure it was for him. But, very quickly he came to see that EVMS students have an opportunity to witness a wide variety of medical procedures (procedures they would not witness in other contexts).  He also came to realize that the services were valuable in ways he had not imagined. At this point, that same student continues to volunteer at Albero House, though it is not required, and has ideas for several innovative research and quality improvement projects. He evaluates his time at Albero House as “…a great experience.”
