 Overview
Eastern Virginia Medical School, in
cooperation with Old Dominion University, offers an
M.D./MPH dual degree program for students who have been admitted to Eastern Virginia
Medical School. The program takes five years to complete. At the end of that time,
students will receive both Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees.
Medical school provides skills and knowledge
to diagnose and treat individual patients. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree
supplements that medical education by providing physicians with skills in population-based
research, design and evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention programs, and
management of the health care delivery system. The public health program focuses on the
diseases, health status, and system of health care delivery for population groups.
Educational Format
Three pathways exist for
completion of the degree. The student chooses which best meets his/her
needs.
- Epidemiology includes courses in study design, use
of data from small and large populations, disease and injury surveillance and control,
survey methods, biostatistics, and outcomes research.
- Health Management/Policy includes courses in health
care strategies, politics and policy, program evaluation, process improvement in health
care, and human resource management.
- Environmental Health includes study
of environmental biology, regulations, policy and management.
Class Schedule
Public health courses are taught in the evenings
or on Saturday and do
not conflict with the medical school courses. Classes are held on the campuses of EVMS and
Old Dominion University.
Tuition (may increase proportionately with inflation)
- In-state: Students pay the in-state medical school tuition yearly and pay
$609 per credit hour for each MPH course taken.
