 Introduction
The Internal Medicine Residency Program of Eastern
Virginia Medical School is an accredited three-year program leading to eligibility for
certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Established in 1975, the program
uses the resources of four affiliated hospitals for the provision of clinical education:
DePaul Medical Center, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and the
Veterans Administration Medical Center. The Department of Internal Medicine is committed
to providing a training environment which produces the highest quality General Internist
for current and future practice environments.
Curriculum
The residency program in Categorical Internal Medicine is
structured to produce excellent general internists. The program emphasizes comprehensive
training in general internal medicine which prepares residents to practice primary care
general internal medicine or to enter advanced training in subspecialty medicine.
In
addition to the three-year residency, the Department of Internal Medicine offers a
Preliminary Internal Medicine year for those requiring one year of medicine prior to entry
into another medical subspecialty program.
