More about the
Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program of Eastern Virginia Medical School is an accredited three-year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Established in 1975, the program uses the resources of four affiliated hospitals for the provision of clinical education: DePaul Medical Center, Sentara Leigh Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The Department of Internal Medicine is committed to providing a training environment which produces the highest quality General Internist for current and future practice environments.

Curriculum

The residency program in Categorical Internal Medicine is structured to produce excellent general internists. The program emphasizes comprehensive training in general internal medicine which prepares residents to practice primary care general internal medicine or to enter advanced training in subspecialty medicine.

In addition to the three-year residency, the Department of Internal Medicine offers a Preliminary Internal Medicine year for those requiring one year of medicine prior to entry into another medical subspecialty program.
