Dermatology Residency Program

Department of Dermatology

Introduction

The Dermatology residency program at Eastern Virginia Medical School is an accredited three-year program leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Dermatology. Newly established in 2002, the goal of the residency program is to produce excellent clinical dermatologists who are prepared to enter the practice of dermatology or a specialty fellowship program.

General Description

Residents divide their time between clinical rotations at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Pariser Dermatology Specialists, Inc., and the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. In addition to seeing a wealth of general clinical dermatology patients, residents spend time each week in Pediatric Dermatology Clinic and working with dermatologists who have extensive training and experience in surgical dermatology.

Curriculum

The educational program includes the following:

  • weekly dermatopathology textbook review and unknown slide conference
  • Monday noon clinical conference
  • clinical dermatology textbook review
  • weekly grand rounds
  • monthly Journal Club
  • Diseases in Depth: each month residents and faculty study a common disease utilizing current literature searches to understand the pathophysiology, histopathology, and evidence for the use of currently available treatments. Utilizing the electronic medical record, residents will also assess their own practice experiences with the disease.
  • monthly dermatologic surgery didactic sessions

Residents attend many regional Dermatology society meetings throughout the year, the Indiana University Cutaneous Basic Science Conference, the annual meeting of the American Academy of the Dermatology, the Society of Investigative Dermatology (second-year residents).

Working with faculty members, residents are expected to complete a chapter or original paper each year.
