How to Receive AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM

AS A PRESENTER

Learning associated with teaching encourages your own professional development as a medical educator. You can earn AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM by engaging in new learning intended to make you a better presenter and then applying your new learning to teaching medical students and residents/fellows.  CME credit recognizes how your learning changed your teaching.  Here is the basic principle of learning associated with teaching.

BENEFITS

  • Undertake new learning associated with making you a better teacher/presenter which may include acquiring new factual information, communication skills or teaching techniques, how to make better slides, or how to mentor.
  • Apply your new learning by teaching medical students, residents or fellows as a presenter.
  • You will be awarded 2 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM for every hour of teaching time.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The process applies only to presenting at EVMS grand rounds or conferences.
  • Learning must be paired with teaching.  You must engage in some new learning that is applied to teaching.
  • If you teach the same content on more than one occasion, even to a different audience, you may claim credit only once.  However, if you undertake new learning, even on a previous topic, that becomes a new learning-teaching combination eligible for credit.

LEARNING SOURCES

We expect that the educational material you use will have been developed independent of any ACCME-defined commercial interest.  You can ensure this by using:

  • Peer-reviewed materials in professional journals that follow the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts created by the International Committee on Medical Journal Editors and/or
  • Accredited CME developed and presented in compliance with the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support.

HOW TO RECEIVE CREDIT

Complete and submit the Speaker Credit Form reporting only TEACHING time; do not include your learning time.  The EVMS CME Office will calculate the amount of credit you will be awarded by doubling the teaching time then rounding to the nearest quarter-hour.  Credit will appear in your EVMS CME transcript.
