EVMS Clinical Psychology Internship - Objectives

Objectives

Psychology interns receiving training through the EVMS Clinical Psychology Internship Program are expected to seek consultation, supervision and peer support as needed and use it productively. The clinical psychology intern will:

 

  1. demonstrate strong knowledge of ethical and confidentiality principles and consistently apply them appropriately;
  2. interact professionally and appropriately with treatment teams, peers, supervisors and patients at all times;
  3. seek out empirical knowledge regarding treatment cases as needed to enhance knowledge about the patients' psychological status;
  4. take responsibility for key patient care tasks, autonomously ensuring that tasks are completed promptly and demonstrating the necessary self-direction, with regards to gathering clinical and research information, to develop the skills to practice independently and competently as a professional psychologist.
  5. demonstrate positive coping strategies to manage personal and professional stressors, so that quality patient care continues uninterrupted;
  6. consistently achieve strong rapport with patients;
  7. maintain sensitivity to cultural and other individual differences;
  8. gather relevant interview data promptly, appropriately evaluating immediate concerns such as suicidality, homicidality, and any other safety issues and designing contingency plans regarding safety issues if needed;
  9. perform an assessment of the patient referred for consultation, incorporating mental status exam, structured interview techniques or psychological assessment as needed to respond effectively to referral questions;
  10. proficiently administer and interpret commonly used cognitive and personality tests and other tests in his or her area of practice within psychology;
  11. write a well-organized psychological report, answering the referral question clearly and providing specific recommendations for patient care;
  12. formulate useful case conceptualizations, that guide treatment and draw on theoretical and research knowledge;
  13. formulate appropriate therapeutic treatment goals in collaboration with patients;
  14. provide interventions that are well-timed, effective and consistent with empirically supported treatment;
  15. cope with therapy challenges and complications such as conflict, premature termination and transference issues;
  16. demonstrate knowledge of a recognized model of supervision and employ this model with other trainees, such as psychology graduate students; and provide their supervisees with accurate input to enhance the student's development as a psychology;
  17. develop a plan for research or other professional writing activities while on internship, if applicable to the intern's future career goals, and demonstrate the skills sufficient to accomplish these goals;
  18. identify, attend and participate in educational programs (e.g. seminars, workshops, specialized training opportunities) as needed for professional development.

Rotation specific objectives and resources to function effectively on each rotation are provided by the supervisors.
